Guide diaries: Brandon Hartwig

Guide diaries: Brandon Hartwig

When it comes to local secrets you won’t find anyone better than our guides here at Niseko Photography & Guiding. We’re spending the next few weeks asking each of them a series of questions. Next up is Brandon Hartwig, who grew up snowboarding in Lake Louise, Canada, and is a serious outdoor enthusiast. He spends his winter deep in the backcountry and his summer tackling challenging adventures, having just cycled around Russia, Mongolia and China.

Where did you grow up, Brandon?
I grew up in good ol’ Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

How did you start boarding?
Strapped in and pointed downwards.

Favourite local spot to ski or board:
I can’t be giving away secrets like that, but in honesty any place in the backcountry.

Favourite thing to do on a day off:
Splitboard, onsen, eat, sleep, and repeat.

Favourite place to eat:
There are too many good places to eat, especially anywhere in Kutchan, but Kobito is pretty top notch.

Favourite piece of guiding or photography equipment:
Definitely a giant puffy belay jacket.

It’s a powder day! What do you do first?
Call in sick.

What do you love about Japan?
The people, the powder, and mochi ice cream.

What do you wish you knew about Japan before you got here?
Without a doubt, more Japanese.
